PERCEPTION OF DISABILITY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES:


There are no reliable data available regarding the prevalence rate of disabilities in most of the developing countries. All current estimates are based on the studies conducted in the western countries. The rates generally quoted in this respect are the ones authenticated through UNO, WHO or UNICEF publications.

It has been universally assumed that the overall rate of prevalence of disabilities in the world population is about to. By this count the number of disabled persons in the world was estimated at 387 million in 1975.The developing countries have fallen into the habit of using these statistics for estimating the disabled person in their populations.

Recently there has been the tendency to quote the rate of disability in the developing countries as over 20. This estimate is based on the California study which reported this rate for the under privileged sections of their population.
