DESCRIPTION OF THE PILOT STUDY SITE
The present study was conducted in the city of Lahore, an ancient city which dates back to the dawn of the recorded history. Throughout Pakistan it is known as the city of colleges and gardens which reflect the old glory and the present life style of its people.
Lahore presents a picturesque combination of old tradition and modern way of life. It originally was a walled city with unique characteristics. This section of the city still exists and is shown in the map attached herewith. The walled city consists of labyrinthine, multi-story buildings and narrow bazaars. The most outstanding feature of this area., however, is the “Lahorites’, natives of this locality. They generally live in a joint family system; sometime 10-15 families residing in a circumscribed area called ‘Katri’. Illiteracy used to be the common denominator of this area, but now most of the children are school-going.
